Between August 2007 and September 2008 Simon Roberts (b.1974) turned his camera on his homeland, England. We English is the result of a journey around the country by Roberts documenting its landscape on a large format 5x4 camera. Informed by the photography of his predecessors and by the romantic tradition of English landscape painting, Roberts depicts the English at leisure. The work is beautiful, accessible and often heart-warming. This is one of the most significant contributions to the photography of England in the last decade.
For a year, from July 2004, Simon Roberts travelled over 75,000 kilometres across Russia, creating one of the most extensive, comprehensive photographic accounts of this vast country by a Westerner. His images are intimate and revealing portraits of contemporary Russians, showing a diverse people, united by a sense of common identity, while breathtaking landscapes reveal the complexity and uniqueness of the country. Motherland was published in 2007 (Chris Boot Ltd) to critical acclaim.
Simon Roberts been commissioned as the official Election Artist by The House of Commons. He is calling for members of the public to contribute their own photographs of political activity in their area. For more information, or to take part, visit www.theelectionproject.co.uk.
