This work is about ideas of nationalism and native identities. Indawong works with Nigerian-born British citizens and examines the way they present their own culture within a British context. The photographs feature women wearing their traditional garments at Sunday church in Brixton, London. The images are taken from behind, concealing each woman’s face so that identity is represented mainly through their clothes. Indawong is interested in the idea of ‘Nation’ as a form of self-representation or performance.
